Hawaii, the 50th state of the USA, is a group of islands in the Pacific Ocean 2,500 miles south west of the USA. There are eight main islands, the capital is Honolulu on Oahu. The largest island is Big Island. Hawaii has 1.1 million inhabitants. They speak English and Hawaiian. The Hawaiian language has only twelve letters. The currency is the US-Dollar.
70 million years ago submarine volcanoes broke out. The lava hardened and so the islands were formed. Today there are still two active volcanoes, the Mauna Loa and the Kilauea. The last eruption in 1986 brought 300,000 square meter new land on Big Island. Beside eruption of volcanoes there are often earthquakes on land and in water. The water earthquakes are the reason for the existence of the Tsunami. This is a flood with huge waves, which can grow to a height of 35 metres. The worst Tsunami killed 150 people and caused a damage of 25 millions Dollars in the area of Hilo (Big Island) in 1946.
